Tamarac was incorporated in 1963. Developer Ken Behring started buying land in the early 1960s and built two-bedroom, maintenance-free homes as an active adult community. The city took its name from the Tamarac Country Club in nearby Oakland Park. By 2020 the population was 71,897.
