Pest Control in Pine Tree Estates

Pine Tree Estates is one of the oldest parts of Parkland. It has 633 custom homes on lots of an acre or more, sits near the Parkland Equestrian Center, and has no HOA. The zoning allows limited agricultural use, so you'll see barns, guest houses, workshops and horse setups mixed in with the main houses.

That's a very different pest picture from a gated subdivision. Big trees, outbuildings, feed and open ground all bring their own problems.

Barns, feed and rats

Wherever there's grain or animal feed, rodents follow. UF/IFAS notes rats will travel 100 to 150 feet from shelter to food or water, and roof rats nest up off the ground in trees and roof spaces. On a big lot, that means rats can live in the barn or the tree line and still reach the house. Feed in metal bins with tight lids helps a lot. So does keeping the yard clear of junk piles. See rat and mouse control.

Older homes and termites

Some homes here are among the oldest in the city. Older wood framing, additions built at different times and wood structures like fences and sheds touching the soil all raise the odds of termites. A full inspection should cover the outbuildings too, not just the main house. Read up on subterranean termites and drywood termites.

  • Store feed and birdseed in sealed metal containers
  • Keep hay and lumber up off the ground and away from the house
  • Clear brush piles near the property line
  • Point out every outbuilding when the tech arrives

Mosquitoes and standing water

Water troughs, buckets, tarps over equipment and low spots in the pasture all hold rain. Dump and refill troughs often during the wet season. Our mosquito page has the full list.
